Biobank - Samples" dataset is a subpart of the Sciensano Biobank dataset. It includes information on the biological samples used for various analyses, ensuring proper documentation and traceability for research purposes. Each study records and manages its samples within this system, supporting scientific research and regulatory compliance. The Central Biobank Platform Sciensano provides support to the Sciensano Biobank modules (and their professional, medical managers). These Sciensano biobanks, defined with different aims and activities, are available to Sciensano internal as well as external scientists for registering human body material sample collections to be used in research studies. After registration, samples can be stored in a biobank, typically with donor informed consent, and made available for (re-)use in scientific research, approved by an ethics committee. The dataset concerns the sample registers of the studies using the Sciensano Biobank modules. These registers, filled in by the study responsible scientists in collaboration with the Central Biobank Platform, are managed in a biobanking information management system. They contain for each incoming / outgoing sample the legally required data (such as sample type and date of reception in / receipt from the biobank) as well as other important biobanking data (such as donor consent info, test results and storage location). This in order to comply with the legal, ethical and quality framework for biobanking. Other study-related data, such as survey data, is not available in the dataset. In case of pseudonymized sample coding, a donor identification key is available, though never in the possession of the Central Biobank Platform. If applicable, according to the biobank legislation, registered personal data can be preserved for maximum 50 years after obtaining the human body material being stored in a biobank.
